The Maowl guide
One short page per feature, from your first table to a model your whole team works on.
Open MaowlDrawing your model
- Tables and foreign keys – add tables, connect them with foreign keys by dragging, and edit everything right on the canvas.
- Columns and keys – set data types and example values, mark columns Unique or Required, choose the primary key, and paste in a whole block of columns at once.
- Layers – split a large database into parts you can show, hide, and lock, or combine several models into one.
- Notes – keep design decisions and open questions next to the tables they're about.
- Style, Simple mode, and Square mode – colors, sizes, dark mode, and cleaner views for presenting a model.
- Arrange – reduce crossing foreign keys and space out your tables and notes so nothing overlaps.
- Keyboard shortcuts – the keys and gestures you'll use most.
Getting tables in and out
- Export – get
CREATE TABLEstatements for PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, or SQLite, a JSON file, or an SVG or PNG image. - Import and merge – draw the tables in a schema file, turn a pasted list of names into tables, and merge a model into the one you have open.
- Import a Neo4j schema – for teams that also use Neo4j: run two queries in Neo4j Browser, paste the results, and we'll draw the model for you.
Working together
- Accounts, sharing, and collaboration – sign in, share a model with the people you choose, and edit it together in real time.
- AI assistants – let Claude, ChatGPT, or another assistant draft and edit your tables.
